Job Description

The Africa Climate and Clean Air Project is seeking an Environment and Health Specialist to provide coordination for addressing environment and health nexus issues. This role will promote a common narrative, enhanced visibility and prioritization of action to address household air pollution and the environment and health nexus to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. This will be accomplished through research, strengthening institutional capacities, raising awareness, empowering environment & health CSOs, and community engagement. 

Duties and Responsibilities

The roles of the selected individual will include:

  • Coordinate closely with the Programs Manager in designing and carrying out all the tasks in Environment and Health Nexus.
  • Provide substantive technical and programme support in the implementation of the Africa Climate and Clean Air Project. This includes review and analysis of issues and trends in air quality management;
  • Engage closely with Kenya Technical working group (TWG) on household air pollution; and represent the Africa Climate and Clean Air Project in TWG meetings and update the project team
  • Conduct a situational assessment to identify the data availability & needs related to household air pollution in Kenya (use of unclean fuels, unclean technologies, etc.)
  • Carry out an analysis of health effects from indoor air pollution using the survey tools and other available data & write report with main findings.
  • To review, evaluate and select criteria for cost-effective air pollution and health interventions and policies for National and County Governments; and provide synthesis and guidance also for the identification of indicators of policy monitoring and what can be agreed good practices and ‘best-buys’.
  • Support project partners and other relevant stakeholders with the purpose of transferring the knowledge.
  • Programme management – provide organizational support for trainings, workshops, inception meetings and stakeholder consultations; provide input and technical advice for development of knowledge products and policy documents; provide research and analyses, provide inputs to donor reporting on project delivery.
  • Liaison with the Project implementing partners – coordinate all actions required to ensure effective operation; facilitate engagement with countries and other stakeholders with the purpose building partnerships and transferring knowledge.

Recruitment Qualifications

Education:      

Master’s degree in public health, environmental epidemiology, environmental health, and other related fields.

Experience:

A minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in air quality management, air pollution issues and environment-health nexus, is required.

  • Experience in research, analyses/assessment, preparation of background papers for projects and conferences is required.
  • Strong analytical and writing skills are required for this position, as well as experience in facilitating meetings and workshops involving a wide range of stakeholders including government officials.
  • Knowledge of the air quality assessment and monitoring processes; and epidemiological research .
  • Knowledge of, and technical expertise in environment, clean transport, and/or sustainable development particularly in Africa is an advantage.
  • Prior experience working in an international organization setting providing advisory and technical support in environment management and air quality is desirable.

Language Requirements:
