The year 2020-2021 was a difficult year not just in Kenya but globally. Covid-19 pandemic hit the global community hard, battering economies, disrupting supply chains, exposing weak health-care systems and left many people vulnerable to unforgiving effects of climate change. It revealed our vulnerability to illness and disease. It reinforced the consequences of neglecting our climate. And it exposed the extent and damage that natural calamities can inflict on global systems.

It was also, one of the most consequential years in Multi-link Sustainability Africa’s history. Our leadership team, and our entire staff, responded to these challenges with integrity and fortitude while never losing sight of our collective commitment to play our role to safeguard the future of the planet for all of humanity. As you will read in this report, we made extraordinary alliances with communities, collaborating to protect their places from harm. We forged strong partnerships with corporations, based upon their commitment to reduce the impact of their operations while committing resources to protect the environment at an accelerating pace. And we worked with governments so they could further their commitments to protecting nature and the health of their people. Partnerships with funding partners enabled us to meet our objectives, reach more communities and have lasting impact on legislation and policy.

We have a strong and healthy organization, one with the agility, wisdom and ambition to achieve our goals over the next few years. These efforts will require us to maintain this disposition and combine it with an insistent and reinvigorated intensity. Because here is another hard truth: The task of keeping global temperatures from rising above 1.5 degrees is enormous. A lot need to be done to achieve this gigantic duty, yet in large to get there, countries need to make dramatic and immediate changes.

While every person on Earth has the right to a healthy environment, this calls for great care of our resources and sustainable planning and development. Caring for the Earth is a unifying platform that has the power to activate young people, transform the behavior of companies and activate the commitments of governments.

Our task now is nurturing the partnerships we have established while forging new ones and developing innovative new solutions. I strongly believe we are up to the task. We will need to be agile. We will need to be creative. We will need your support.

Sincerely,

Michael Njoroge
Managing Director
