Strong Foundation for Sustainability

Mathare-opening

Multilink contributes to the economic and social well-being of people in the areas where we operate because we recognise that success in managing our environment is deeply linked to society’s progress. Our investments in the environment also are investments in the long-term safeguarding of livelihoods, cleaner air quality and food security; these therefore deliver mutual benefit and promote shared progress. Wherever we are, we strive to be a good neighbour, sharing the concerns of our communities and working to create a better future. In all of our activities, Multi-link promotes a culture of excellence, social justice and equity.

Cleaner Indoor Air

Mathare1

Multilink from 2010 became active in the promotion, development and distribution of clean cookstoves in a bid to alleviate challenges that were facing most communities related to the traditional way of cooking: (i) indoor air pollution, (ii) deforestation and (iii) energy poverty burden.

Over the years Multi-link has distributed over 7,500 clean cookstoves and engaged in the development and testing of several innovative models of clean cookstoves. Multi-link was also a Founder member of the Clean Cookstoves Association of Kenya. The use of improved stoves is associated with 63% lower levels of personal PM(2.5), 73% lower levels of indoor PM(2.5), and 87% lower levels of indoor carbon monoxide as compared to traditional stoves. Women using traditional stoves reported symptoms more frequently than those using improved stoves. For this reason, we are proud to be associated with initiatives that have richly contributed to the well-being of the communities we operate in as well as making our share of contribution in the global fight against climate Change.

Sustained Livelihoods

Climate variability and extreme events have devastating impacts on communities, causing loss of life, human suffering, and the destruction of the infrastructure and natural resource base upon which many livelihoods depend. Multi-link believes the time to act is now, and that’s why we are taking the lead in projects and programs that are climate-led by data and science to ensure a positive impact against factors that contribute to climate change.

The rising toll of today’s climate-related disasters foreshadows the likely adverse future impacts of climate change and signals an urgent need to minimize current vulnerabilities. For poor communities living on fragile and degraded lands, actions must address the deteriorating environmental conditions that undermine their livelihoods and capacity to cope with disasters. Protecting and enhancing the natural services that buffer communities from climate impacts and provide them with a range of assets for coping with shocks will not only address immediate development priorities but also improve local capacities to adapt to climate change.
